To make Firefox compatible with Thunderbird (which means mailto:// protocol will be handled by Thunderbird), you should apply the following:

• Open about:config address
• Add a string line having the following values:

  network.protocol-handler.app.mailto = /usr/bin/mozilla-thunderbird
